First Cruise Booked for New Amador Port

Construction has officially started on a new cruise port on Amador Causeway and now comes word that the first ship has already booked space in the facility.

Pres. Juan Carlos Varela sent out a tweet announcing the booking, which is a sure sign that the cruise port will soon become an important part of the Panama City economy. While Varela didn’t confirm any details, the photo he published shows that the Crystal Symphony has reserved space for Oct. 15 and Dec. 7 and 8, 2019, according to a report from El Capital Financiero.

While that may seem far off, the announcement suggests that the cruise ship industry is serious about taking advantage of the new cruise ship facility, and the government is committed to completing the port in a timely fashion.

The cruise ship terminal on Perico should be a huge economic catalyst to Amador. The government has committed more than $300 million to help turn Amador into Panama City’s new tourist center, which is attracting investors from around the world. Construction started earlier this month on the $165 million cruise terminal, with the construction consortium led by the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC). The facility will be able to handle two ships a day with 5,000 passengers each.

Founded in 1988, Crystal Cruises focuses on luxury cruises. The 50,000-ton Crystal Symphony is going through an extensive makeover, including new suites and facilities, which will reduce the capacity to 848 passengers, according to the company’s Web site.
