Panama City Advances Major Urban Mobility Expansion

Panama City is preparing for a significant infrastructure upgrade as the country moves forward with plans to expand the Corredor Sur, one of the capital’s primary toll highways.

The Corredor Sur runs along the Pacific coastline and serves as a critical east–west connection between Panama City’s financial districts and its fastest-growing residential and commercial areas. As traffic volumes have increased steadily in recent years, this corridor has become essential to daily commuting, logistics, and overall urban mobility.

The planned expansion focuses on increasing capacity along the eastern section of the highway, where congestion is most pronounced. The project includes additional traffic lanes and new access points designed to improve circulation, reduce bottlenecks, and shorten travel times for more than 100,000 daily users. Established areas such as Costa del Este are expected to benefit directly from improved accessibility.

The investment is expected to exceed US$200 million and will be financed primarily through toll revenues and debt issuance, in line with Panama’s long-standing concession model for highway development. Toll operations will remain in place, as they continue to play a central role in funding infrastructure maintenance and expansion without relying on public budget resources.

Construction will be carried out in phases throughout 2026. While temporary traffic adjustments are expected during the works, the long-term objective is a more efficient and resilient transportation corridor capable of supporting Panama City’s continued urban and economic growth.

Beyond improved mobility, the expansion underscores Panama’s ongoing commitment to strategic infrastructure investment—an essential foundation for connectivity, competitiveness, and long-term value across the city’s most important corridors.
