Multinational Returning to Panama

In a move seen as a vote of confidence for Panama, banana giant Chiquita has agreed to restart operations in Bocas del Toro.
Chiquita will invest $30 million to launch production again and should be fully operational by Feb. 2026, Reuters reports. The company says it will launch a “more modern, sustainable, and efficient operating model,” which should provide a major boost to the local economy. Chiquita also expects to create 5,000 jobs in the next few months.
The Chamber of Commerce, Industries, and Agriculture of Panama said the company’s decision shows the potential of Bocas del Toro, which will be recognized “worldwide for the quality of its lands for banana production.”
The company closed its operations earlier this year after a dispute with workers over pension reforms.
Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino personally travelled to Brazil to meet with the company and negotiate its return.
“I will always stand for investment, production, and decent work for our people,” Mulino said in a statement posted on X. “Now is the time to look forward and reorganize the country for the benefit of Panamanian families.”
Bananas are Panama’s top export product, representing 12% of total exports in the first five months of 2025, according to news reports.
“In 2026, Panamanian bananas will shine again in the international market,” Chiquita said in a statement.
