Study Begins on Panama-David Train

The plan to develop a train route from Panama City to David took a step forward this week.

The National Railway Secretariat of Panama announced the start of the preparation of the Environmental Impact Study for the first phase of the long-discussed train line, which could provide  a major economic boost to the western region, including the coastal destinations.

The agency has hired engineering and environmental consulting firm WSP to begin surveying of the environmental and social baseline of the first phase of the route. The route will encompass the provinces of Panama, West Panama, Coclé, and Herrera.

“The process is a fundamental stage that will ensure that the development of the railway project is carried out under the highest standards of sustainability, transparency and respect for communities and the environment,” the agency said in a statement.

The study will evaluate current environmental conditions and support the socio-environmental assessment of the project, “with the purpose of defining the management, prevention, mitigation and environmental compensation measures that ensure a sustainable, responsible execution in balance with the environment and local communities.”

The project will adhere to “the highest international sustainability standards,” the agency said.

“We are committed to promoting a project that will transform the country’s mobility, respect its environmental wealth, and contribute to improving the quality of life for Panamanians,” said  Henry Faarup, National Railway Secretary. “his train is a symbol of integration, progress, and national vision.”
