‘Green’ Convention Center Plan Moves Forward in Boquete

The Panama Tourism Authority is ready to issue a tender for the design and construction of a convention center in Boquete, the northern Panama city popular with expats and retirees.

The project will be the region’s first “green” convention center, including wastewater management and energy conservation systems, and have room for 2,000 visitors. Three farms totaling four hectares was transferred to control of the Tourism Authority last week, paving the way for construction of the convention center, according to coverage in CentralAmericaData.

The goal of the new center is to boost business tourism and business in the province of Chiriquí. But it is also the next step in the development of Boquete, which is one of the biggest tourist and second-home destinations in Panama.

“I think these works will greatly improve the location of Boquete as a center of tourist attraction,” said Chirican businessman Ricardo Perez during a ceremony announcing the land deal.

Boquete was chosen for the beautiful environment, the proximity to an international airport and the availability of about 1,500 hotel rooms in the area, according to Tourism Authority administrator Gustavo Him. The transfer of the land clear the path for the project to move forward, he said.

The Tourism Authority has aggressive plans for the convention center, which will feature “state-of-the-art technology in all its spaces, to be at the forefront of the demands of the big event organizers in the world,” Him said.

The Tourism Authority hopes to attract “the European traveler, who looks for in the promotional packages to live experiences and extreme adventures,” he said. “With this, we also want that hotel companies, tour operators, transport service, travel agencies, among others, benefit from the activity.”
