Panama Named Best Country to Retire (Again)

It happens so often it’s not really news anymore. Once again Panama has been named the best country in the world for retirees.

The latest organization to come to this conclusion is International Living, which listed Panama at the top of its annual “Global Retirement Index.” The marketing firm has its own formula for deciding the best retirement destination, including a formula of such factors as buying and renting property, special benefits for retirees; cost of living; ease of integration; entertainment and amenities; health care; infrastructure; and climate.

“We consider not only a wealth of statistics, but—critically—more than three decades of expertise and current insights from our network of correspondents,” the company says.

Panama finished first, ahead of Ecuador, Mexico, Costa Rica and Malaysia. Panama, which is well known for its retirement benefits and welcoming culture, scored particularly high in Benefits and Discounts, Visas and Residence, Entertainment and Amenities, and Healthy Lifestyle

For the record, Vietnam is last, ranking worse than Guatemala, Cambodia, Ireland and the Dominican Republic which round out the bottom five.
