Google Expands Digital Infrastructure in the Americas with Three New Submarine Cables
Google has announced a major expansion of its digital infrastructure in the Americas with the deployment of three new submarine cable systems: Alisios, Canoa, and OlaLuz. This project, part of the new Americas Connect network, represents an investment of over $500 million designed to increase capacity, security, and resilience across Latin America, the Caribbean, the United States, and Europe.
Panama will play a highly strategic role within this new infrastructure, cementing its position as a central digital hub for the region.
The Alisios cable will directly connect Chile, Panama, and the Dominican Republic, creating a new high speed route for data traffic between South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. From Panamanian territory, additional connections will establish routes toward the west coast of the United States.
The company aims to create redundant connections in the Pacific Ocean. This architecture ensures that data continues to flow smoothly even if one route experiences interruptions, supporting the growing demand for cloud services and artificial intelligence.
The expansion also includes the Canoa and OlaLuz systems. Canoa will link the Dominican Republic with Bermuda, where it can interconnect with the Nuvem and Sol cables to reach the US and Europe. Meanwhile, OlaLuz will establish a direct connection between the Dominican Republic and Florida.
To further strengthen the Caribbean network, Google will add a new branch of the Firmina cable into Dominican territory, expanding access to various Google Cloud regions.
President of Panama José Raúl Mulino highlighted that choosing the country as a strategic node represents a massive leap for digital transformation. The project aligns perfectly with Panama’s Digital Hub initiative and the National Digital Strategy. According to the president, this enhanced connectivity will drive economic opportunities, foster technological talent, and help close the digital divide.
