Panama City Project Wins International Award

Everybody in Panama City knows the impact of the Cinta Costera, the  new highway over the bay connecting Avenida Balboa and downtown to  the Amador Causeway and the Bridge of Americas. Not only did the  highway improve the flow of traffic around the city, Cinta Costera created  new trails, bike paths and a scenic corridor around Panama’s beautiful  bay.

Now Cinta Costera is getting the international attention it deserves.  Engineering News-Record, one of the most influential trade magazines in the construction industry, has named Cinta Costera the Global Best Project in the roads and highways category. The award, which was chosen by a jury of global industry professionals, specifically recognizes the project for its innovation, contribution to the community, aesthetic quality and workmanship, among other qualities.

This is one more sign that Panama City is taking its rightful spot among the world’s great cities. More and more, Panama City is attracting international attention for its design, architecture and engineering achievements. Last year the Frank Gehry-designed biomuseum opened, attracting international attention; the sail-like shape of the Trump Ocean Club in Punta Pacifica has become a symbol for the modern Panama; and, of course, the Panama Canal is one of the marvels of the world.

The Cinta Costera is worthy of a place among the great city icons. It combines great design with exceptional functionality, improving the lives of everyone in Panama City.

The developers and designers of Cinta Costera will be formally presented with the ENR award in a ceremony on Sept. 10 at the Grand Hyatt in New York City.
