Secrets Opens First Resort in Panama

The fast-growing international hotel chain Secrets has officially opened its first resort in Panama, taking over operations of the Intercontinental on Playa Bonita.

The introduction of the Secrets brand, which is owned by AmResorts, brings another big international player to Panama, and that means more promotions and marketing around the world. The adults-only Secrets Playa Bonita Panama Resort has 303 rooms in 11 waterfront towers, plus five pools, jungle walkways, ocean view suites, and a 10,000-square-foot spa.

The Playa Bonita property is the 42nd resort in the company’s collection and the 15th Secrets-branded hotel.

“Panama has become a premier destination for luxury experiential travel, making it a perfect fit for our award-winning brand,” Alex Zozaya, CEO of Apple Leisure Group, parent of AMResorts, said in a statement last year.

Playa Bonita is a 30-minute drive from downtown Panama City, providing a spectacular jungle-covered beach escape for locals and tourists. And visitors to Playa Bonita can easily take advantage of all the entertainment and excitement of the city.

}AMResorts is reportedly refurbishing the property, which is owned by Bern Hotels & Resorts, the hospitality division of Empresas Bern.

As we reported last July, Unlimited Vacation Clubs, another subsidiary of AMResorts, is planning to open the Dream Bonaventura, in Farallon, about a 90-minute drive from the city, in 2016. The Dream resort will feature 614 rooms in the gated Bonaventura community, which includes a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course and a full-service equestrian center.
