Panama’s government has big plans for the Amador Causeway. While work is moving forward on the current $300 million master plan, the government has quietly updated its vision to turn the scenic stretch of four islands at the mouth of the Panama Canal into a major international tourist destination.

The vision for the new plan is staggering. PPR found a government-produced video (below) which shows in beautiful detail the future possibilities for Amador. Although it is safe to say not everything will be built, the video illustrates the vast potential of Amador and the very real planning effort the government is undertaking to make the Causeway dream a reality.

The update goes far beyond the current initiative, which includes Panama’s largest convention center and a new cruise ship port—both currently under construction—as well as the planned expansion of the Frank Gehry-designed Biomuseo. An expansion of Causeway road was completed earlier this year, improving access and expanding the one-of-a-kind network of parks and bike paths.

As you’ll see in the video, the government’s vision is to make Amador a premier global destination, with all the amenities you would expect from a top-level luxury community. The new plan, which has been discussed for the past year, includes a new road connecting Amador directly to the Cinta Costera and landing on Naos island, an expanded cruise terminal, new museums, a half-dozen restaurants on the Canal, extensive residential communities and an expanded marina.
