Copa Airlines Brings Starlink Wi-Fi to Latin American Skies

Copa Airlines has started a new phase in passenger connectivity with the rollout of Starlink high-speed internet across its fleet, making the Panamanian carrier the first airline in Latin America to offer the satellite-based service onboard its aircraft. The first Starlink-equipped Copa flight took off on July 4, marking the beginning of a gradual installation process that is expected to cover the airline’s fleet by the first quarter of 2027.

The move is more than a convenience upgrade. For Copa, it strengthens the role of Panama’s Hub of the Americas as a regional connector, not only through routes and airport infrastructure, but also through the digital experience passengers now expect while traveling. Copa’s network already connects Panama with more than 78 destinations in more than 30 countries across the Americas and the Caribbean.

With Starlink onboard, passengers on equipped aircraft will be able to browse, message, stream content, work in cloud-based applications and stay connected during the flight. The technology uses low-Earth-orbit satellites, which are designed to deliver faster and lower-latency internet than many traditional in-flight systems. Reuters has described this shift as part of a broader race among global airlines to improve onboard internet as connectivity becomes a more important part of the travel experience.

Access, however, will not be free for everyone. Complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi will be available to ConnectMiles PreferMember Gold, Platinum and Presidential members, passengers traveling in Business Class, and customers with Starlink Residential or Starlink Roam subscriptions. Other passengers will be able to purchase internet access through Starlink’s onboard portal. Copa has not announced the exact price of those paid plans.

So far, there is no public indication that the rollout will increase the base price of Copa tickets. Based on the information available, Starlink appears to be structured as an onboard service, with free access for selected passenger groups and a paid option for others.

Copa is not alone in moving toward faster in-flight internet. Hawaiian Airlines already offers free Starlink Wi-Fi across its Airbus-operated flights between Hawaii, the continental United States, Asia and Oceania. Qatar Airways also offers Starlink connectivity on several aircraft types, with complimentary access and speeds promoted as ultra-fast. American Airlines has announced plans to equip more than 500 narrow-body aircraft with Starlink starting in 2027.

For Latin America, Copa’s rollout is still significant. The airline is placing Panama at the front of a change that is quickly becoming standard in global aviation. Flying no longer has to mean disconnecting, and Copa is using that shift to reinforce both its passenger experience and Panama’s role as one of the region’s most important air travel hubs.

5 Things to Know

  1. Copa is the first airline in Latin America to offer Starlink onboard. The first equipped flight took place on July 4, starting the progressive rollout across the fleet.

  2. The full installation is expected by early 2027. Copa expects the implementation to cover all aircraft by the first quarter of 2027, so not every flight will have the service immediately.

  3. It will not be free for everyone. Business Class passengers, top ConnectMiles members and certain Starlink customers will receive complimentary access. Other passengers will be able to buy access onboard.

  4. Copa has not announced a ticket price increase. There is no public information showing that Starlink will raise base airfares. The service appears to work as an onboard connectivity option.

  5. This is part of a larger airline trend. Major carriers including Hawaiian Airlines, Qatar Airways and American Airlines are already using or preparing to install Starlink as in-flight internet becomes a competitive advantage.
