Tocumen International Airport Prepares $306.7 Million Expansion
Panama’s Tocumen International Airport is set for a massive transformation. The administration has announced a $306.75 million investment plan divided into two strategic megaprojects designed to expand operational capacity, modernize the airfield, and solidify Panama’s position as the premier aviation hub of the Americas.
The expansion comes at a critical time for the regional transit center. The airport expects to handle approximately 22.6 million passengers in 2026 and is planning ahead to accommodate over 30 million travelers by 2030. To meet this surging demand, the new infrastructure will prevent operational bottlenecks and allow for the arrival of new long distance routes.
Expanding Terminal 2 with the New South Pier
The centerpiece of the investment is the $208.75 million expansion of Terminal 2, known as the South Pier or Muelle Sur. This project spans over 21,000 square meters across three levels.
It will add ten new direct contact boarding gates and four remote positions to the terminal. Furthermore, the construction will replace existing flexible pavements on the taxiways with high strength rigid concrete, addressing previous structural issues and improving long term durability.
The South Pier expansion has an estimated execution period of 30 months, followed by a mandatory 12 month maintenance phase.
Modernizing the Airfield and Boosting Capacity
The second project allocates $98 million specifically for the comprehensive modernization of the airfield. This phase focuses on upgrading runways, taxiways, and parking platforms to maximize operational safety and efficiency.
A key feature of this second project is the addition of eight new remote positions in the northern sector of Terminal 1. These new spaces are designed to be versatile, accommodating both high density single aisle aircraft like the Boeing 737 and wide body planes such as the Boeing 777.
Once both megaprojects are completed, Tocumen will boast a total of 84 aircraft parking positions, comprising 64 passenger boarding bridges and 20 remote positions. This increased capacity is vital not only for airlines but also for the broader Panamanian economy, as it will drive international business, attract foreign investment, and boost the local real estate and tourism sectors.
