Cup of Panama Coffee Sells for $1K
A Dubai cafe is offering customers a chance to experience a cup of Panama coffee, considered the most expensive in the world. The price tag? The Julith cafe is pricing one cup at 3,600 dirhams, about $980.
The coffee is brewed from “Nido 7 Geisha” beans, which are grown on a plantation near Panama’s Baru volcano. The beans sold at a “hotly contested” auction earlier this year, with 20kg going for about 2.2 million dirhams, or $600,000.
Panama coffee is famous for setting records, and this new offering appears to set a new bar for a pricey cup o’ Joe. The previous record was also set in Dubai, where a cup sold for 2,500 dirham, according to AFP coverage.
What makes Nido 7 Geisha so special?
“There are white floral notes like jasmine, citrus flavours like orange and bergamot, and a hint of apricot and peach,” said Serkan Sagsoz, co-founder of the Julith cafe. “It’s like honey, delicate and sweet.”
The cafe is planning to offer only “about 400 cups” to the public. And the owners are resisting offers to buy the beans. The cafe has no plans to share any beans, “beyond a small amount reserved for Dubai’s ruling family,” AFP reports.
