Spanish Hotel Chain Targets Panama City

Barcelona-based hotel chain Evenia is investing $20 million in Panama to open a new hotel in Panama City’s El Cangero district.

The Gran Evenia Panama, which is opening this month, will be the company’s first hotel in Panama. The company took over the former site of the Pomodoro restaurant to build a new 100-room hotel with a garden patio and rooftop pool. The centerpiece will be a top-level restaurant, El Jardín de Gaudí, offering “Spanish fusion cuisine with local touches.”

“We want to bring a bit of the design of the Barcelona brand to Panama City with a very innovative aesthetic,” Oriol Molist, vice president of the Evenia chain, told Martes Financiero.

Sixty-year-old Evenia is a growing international brand with hotels in Spain, Portugal, and Andorra. The company says it expects to expand to Mexico, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic in the near future. The company says it will be looking for more opportunities in Panama Real Estate.

“We planned this investment before the pandemic and this delayed us a lot, but we think that the country has a solid economy, legal certainty, and a strategic location,” Molist said. “That is why it makes perfect sense to enter this market and plan expansion to the region from here.”

The new hotel in Panama City will offer five different types of rooms designed to attract both leisure and business travelers, the company said.
